At around 6:15 PM on 09/19/12 Officers from the NPPD responded to the area of West ‘E’ St. and N. Oak Ave. on the report of a sheep running down the middle of the street. I arrived and did not locate the culprit. A search of the area revealed the animal running southbound on Elm with a male subject running on foot about 10 paces behind. The man, wearing cowboy hat, vest, and spurs also had a lasso twirling over head. The Officer continued pursuit and eventually with the assistance of the cowboy, cornered the sheep in an open garage. The ewe was then loaded and transported to the NP Animal Shelter, where it is still being housed. She had on a green collar and was sporting a full/thick fleece. If you own the sheep or can assist law enforcement in identifying the owner please contact the NPPD at 308.535.6789. While sleepy at work before event coverage, I checked my Facebook to find this happened in my hometown today. Stories like this are why I don’t mind the idea of starting my career back there — because sheep in police cars.
